Vennel Bed

Vennel Flower Bed

Since 2011 our enthusiastic gardening volunteers have planted High Street flower beds, conveying messages related to sustainable living and climate change - we hope you've enjoyed them - maybe you'll feel inspired to help plan the next one!

Note: We'll be taking a well earned rest in 2018, and Burgh Beautiful will be planting up a theme to remember WW1. Our plan is to be back in 2019 with a new display for you to enjoy.

2017 - Protect Our Peatlands

This year we have created a 'bog' in the Vennel bed, to convey the importance of protecting our peatlands.

2016 - Healthy Diet, Healthy Planet

Year 6 was focusing on the theme of Healthy Planet and Healthy Diet and how our diet and what we choose to eat has a big impact on the environment. Be that Meat, Fish, Diary, Non-organic methods, etc.  We gave away the crops at the end - there was loads of parsley as we'd used it as edging.

2015 - Melting ice caps

Year 5 was about the dramatic changes taking place at our polar regions, with planting representing melting ice and increasing levels of polar seawater. This also linked in with Paris Climate Convention and the COP21 agreement.

2014 - Growing for Gold: Britain in Bloom 50th anniversary

The forth year we re-located the display to the Low Port Primary School entrance, and that was a theme of golden colours, biodiversity, pollinating plants and had lots of vegetables planted within the display.

2013 - Cereal Crops & Scarecrow

The third year was a focus on cereals with Barley, Oats and Wheat planted to make the connection between the crops grown locally and our food. The scarecrow was a great hit, and all three years were enjoyed by passers-by who stopped to comment on what could be achieved in such a small space.

2012 - Veg in Containers, Wildflowers for Pollinators

The second year was more around recyclable containers, with old fish boxes, wooden wine boxes and even a bug hotel made out of old timber and broken plant pots.

2011 - Peak Oil

In the first year, it was themed around rising energy prices and the connection to food prices. Structure of the display included two large re-cycled oil drums with messages written on them. Quite an eye-opener for the local community.
